Cub Scouts 2010 is the exciting new delivery method of the existing Cub Scout program. The program is handbook-based and focuses on den activities leading to advancement and retention. Cub Scouts 2010 recognizes the shift in family dynamics by moving

most advancement to the den. The change in the delivery method will focus on leaders, meeting plans, and training. The pilot program for Cub Scouts 2010 was the Fast Track model, which is what BSA is adopting as THE national model for delivering Cub Scouts. BSA will only be producing materials using the new delivery method.

In early spring 2010 the annual Program Helps will be replaced by, “Den & Pack Meeting Resource Guide”. This guide will not replace the current leader handbooks but serve to work in tandem with them. The Den & Pack Meeting Guide will be a one stop resource for leaders, which will just briefly introduce Cub Scouting. The guide will be centered around tips and suggestions on meetings, den meeting plans for all ranks, pack meeting plans, as well as other resources. Gone will be the monthly season/craft based themes, they will be replaced with the twelve core values of cub scouting.

With preplanned meetings, den and pack meetings will be more organized, contain more fun, provide for more advancements earned, planning and execution are simplified, and in general easier to run. This all enables the leaders to deliver their program to their scouts more effectively saving time and energy. Pack and den meeting follow seamlessly together allowing continued advancement and maintaining high enthusiasm of the cub scouts. The meeting plans will be year round plans, with scaled down plans for summer months. Plans must be completed in order, and during the months they are developed for. This enables the cub scouts receive their ranks at the appropriate time and age; as well as making sure that the planned activities take place during the appropriate time of the year. We wouldn’t want to be hiking during the winter months in a snow storm, would we? Monthly meeting plans for each rank; will include two den meetings, one “go see it activity” per month. Monthly Pack meeting plans will also be included to tie all den activities together. Pack meetings will now include advancement activities; as well as a breakout session for parents, leaders, and scouts. Cub Scout advancement will naturally occur as part of the planned program.

On the training front, the trainings will be updated to reflect the change in the delivery method and take in account the time constrains of the adult leaders. Fast Start trainings will be updated to include more about how to run a pack/den meeting, and use the new delivery method, while BSA history, organization, and administration will be scaled down. Position Specific will be revised to an online format for den leaders with Cubmasters and the rest to follow at a later date. Training will be shifting to on-line or CD format with continued in-person support and power-point presentations. BALOO Training will remain the same because it is more centered on health and safety, but the OWL training will be changing in the near future. Quick hint for all you Bear Leaders, Webelos Leaders, and Cubmasters be sure to check out “Buckskin Trail” or “Scoutmaster Outdoor Training” in the near future!!!! The change is expected to take place mid 2010, please keep a close watch for more details in the coming months.
